About Us
Mission Statement
"We are neighbors working to be a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization and preservation
by producing safe, decent, affordable housing for low and moderate income home buyers,
and by providing economic development opportunities for residents and neighborhood businesses.".
Garfield Development Corporation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, serves Grand Rapids'
Garfield Park Neighborhood area. While many neighbors are working together to improve this area,
it is known to contain pockets of concentrated poverty, crime and aging homes. The average house
in Garfield Park was built around 1941, however, many homes are much older.
Organization History
Garfield Park is also home to many concerned residents who are actively working to build a better future.
In 1992 a group of the area's business owners and neighborhood leaders founded Garfield Development
Corporation (GDC) to bring about revitalization in the Garfield Park area. Today GDC is working to provide
affordable housing for persons of low and moderate incomes. GDC is also working to partner with other
neighborhood groups and organizations to ensure lasting success for the new homeowners and their neighborhoods.
Positive changes in one or two homes on a block can bring substantial improvement to the neighborhood environment.
Garfield Development Corporation realizes that before many families can approach educational, emotional,
and spiritual growth, their basic shelter needs must be met. GDC rehabilitates existing houses and sells quality,
affordable homes. Along with providing home ownership opportunities, GDC works for lasting neighborhood improvement
through cooperation with churches, individuals, businesses, neighborhood groups, and schools. GDC is working to
build a better future for committed families and individuals.
